Chapter Six

Elia

“Where will you take her? The moment she leaves the Wilds, she becomes an easy target. You know as well as I do, the queen will be watching.” Leopold faced off with Kiru.

“So, she should stay here in the woods like a vagabond?”

“I have an actual home.” Leopold gestured outward.

“What you would call a home—”

“I have a friend,” Elia interrupted their bickering and they turned to face her. “He was taken a few days by one of the folk. Can I locate him now that I’m here?”

Leopold’s brow furrowed. “It would depend on a couple things, like who took him and why.”

“What reasons are there for someone to be taken against their will?”

“Are you sure it was? Against his will, that is,” Leopold asked.

“Yes.” She balled her hands into fists. “Roan would never ditch us to come here.”

“Labor. Entertainment.” Leopold looked away and cleared his throat. “Procreation. The blood in our realm has become diluted. Sometimes a fresh dose of DNA helps.”

“Does it even matter what the human wants?” Her anger grew.

“They don’t see them as equals,” Leopold explained.

“That’s disgusting.” Horror slowly filled her. How could she come from the very people she’d feared for so long?

“They don’t even see me as a fully-fledged being. This is the way of our world. You should get used to it.”

“I will never condone this kind of behavior. How do I find Roan?” They might share the same lineage, but she could choose to not be a monster.

“When you learn to control your powers; you can try to trace him by focusing.”

“Focusing on what?” she asked, confused.

“Each of us has a specific aura. A signature specific to each individual.” He stepped forward. “Close your eyes.”

“Now isn’t the time for lessons—”

She ignored Kiru and did as Leopold asked.

“Think about your friend. How he talks, smells, and looks. Remember the things that make him who he is.”

Images of Roan’s white smile with ridiculous toothpaste commercial straight teeth, and his low laughter, that shook his entire body, led her down a pathway of light. For a brief moment, she felt the odd spark of connection they always shared.

“Roan?” she whispered.

“Elia. Are you really here?”

“Yes. Where—”

Searing pain exploded through her body, severing their connection. Opening her eyes, she found her father battling the green-skinned fae in armor.

“You,” she rasped. Glancing down, she saw a blood-red manacle attached to her wrist. Energy bled from her like she had an open wound. Her knees weakened. She swayed. Her head spun like she’d had too much to drink. Blinking rapidly, she pushed back the darkness as spots danced in front of her vision. She collapsed, falling heavily on her knees. Placing her hand on the earth, she steadied herself. She breathed shallowly, and felt her body functions slow down. Feeling like a fish out of water, she tried to take more air into her lungs.

Digging her fingers into the moist earth, her spine arched as energy poured toward her through a connection. The ground beneath her quaked. A high-pitched sound filled her ears, and silence fell.
